DESCRIPTION Focus Digestion

According to yoga and its sister science ayurveda, health is not only the absence of disease. Health is when all the systems of the body are functioning efficiently, and without a sense of ease in the physical body, it is very difficult to attain a peace in the mind.

A well functioning digestive system is key to physical (and therefore also mental) health, with the body insuring the proper breakdown, absorption and distribution of nutrients, and the elimination of toxins. Yoga promotes this functioning by internally massaging the organs through asanas and regulating the autonomic nervous system through pranayama.

In this workshop we will go through some specific yoga postures that are meant to relieve abdominal pain or discomfort, stimulating the digestive fire (agni) while relaxing, detoxifying, increasing blood flow and creating space within the abdominal organs. We will also develop our breath capacity at the same time as we learn how to allow optimal movement of the diaphragm during deep breathing. And we will practice some specific pranayama techniques that boost the metabolism and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” response.

Whether your digestive issues are caused by IBS, GERD, stress, anxiety or other causes, if you occasionally suffer from cramping, heartburn, nausea, constipation, bloating etc., you will take home some comforting tools with you to use every time you need them.

Important note: This workshop offers an approach for symptom management of chronic digestive issues through appropriate tools of yoga, but it is in no means a cure to diseases. If you have serious digestive complications, please consult with your doctor before registering.
